So
many have written asking for details on the morning power drink I
mentioned in a recent column, I decided to just send it out to my whole
list in case there may be others who want to try it.
=======
8 oz Apple Juice
4 oz Aloe Vera Gel (not juice...gel makes a smooter
drink, juice can be bitter)
1 tbsp Fresh ground flax meal
1 tbsp Barley Powder
1 tbsp Rice Bran Solubles
1 tbsp Soy Lecithin
1 tsp Beet Juice Powder (optional)
1 tbsp Wheat Germ (optional)
(the last two are "optional" because some don't like a drink
that's real thick....of course, no reason you can't mix up a morning and
evening batch)
=====
I whirr this up in a milkshake maker I bought at Service Merchandise for
around $25. A little Hamilton Beach job. I suppose Target and others
have something similar.
FLAX
I buy mine from Heintzman Farms, RR2, Box 265, Onaka SD 57466, phone
800-333-5855. They sell three 1 pound sacks of golden flax with a
grinder for $41.
You can also get golden glax at Village Market in Collegedale or
Nutrition World in Brainerd Village and any kind of grinder will work,
but I like one devoted to flax.
BARLEY POWDER
My favorite is BarleyGreen but it must be bought from an agent or you
must become a sales agent, so I settle for pure barley powder from The
Pines, Box 1107, Lwrence KS 66044 (800-697-1637).
RICE BRAN SOLUBLES
You can also get this from Heintzman but the best I have found is
RiSoTrene from Integris and you can get four cans for $104. Call
1-888-737-7307. Anyone with diabetes should take it two or three times a
day to stabilize blood sugar. Nothing like it and the range of vitamins
and minerals in rice solubles, barley and flax is incredible.
ALOE VERA GEL
I get mine from my massage guy, Bob Long, at Foods For Life on East
Brainerd Road but they also have it at Village Market and Nutrition
World. The gel makes the drink creamier and nothing is better for the
intestinal system than aloe.
BEET JUICE POWDER
I think they have it at Village and Nutrition World. I buy directly from
Pines, Box 1107, Lawrence KS 66044 (800-697-4637) because they
have several other things I like. They have a power green powder you may
want to add. Another power green drink is Greens Plus from Village
Market.
Cautionary Notes
1. Flax meal and rice bran have a slight laxative effect but it is
gentle. Drink the flax pretty fast because you want it to expand in the
intestines and not the stomach. Unlike some laxative brans, it is very
smooth, expands and gently cleans the walls of the intestines. Unless
you drink it too slow, in which case it will expand in the stomach.
2. I like the taste but you may not. If not, try juices and additions
that please your own palate.
3. It sounbds like a lot of trouble but once you get everything
assembled and get the habit, you will never return to a low-nutrition
day-starter. I've been drinking it for at least 12-15- years and seldom
miss a day.
I am NOT an agent for any of these products.
