THE MIND-BOGGLING EMANATION
3-28-10

Upon his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, a reporter asked Roy Clark, “Do you remember much about seeing Hank Williams perform?” Roy answered, “That left such an impression n me and I still haven’t figured it out ... There was just something that emanated from him that was mind-boggling and I still feel it today.”

I understand what Roy is talking about. When I was a young teenager my brother-in-law endeared himself to me forever by taking me to Nashville to see Hank one night when he was on the Grand Ole Opry. His performance mesmerized me. Yet all he did was walk out and sing the “Long Gone Lonesome Blues” and “Dear John I Brought Your Saddle Home.”

He looked like he was coming apart when he sang. His legs and arms all moved in different directions until he actually appeared to be double-jointed. He did not have a particularly pleasant tone to his voice but the raw edge on it cut right through to the bone. I felt like his voice was casting out some kind of demon inside of me. He freed up emotions I had never felt when hearing a man sing, even on a silly song like “Dear John, I Brought Your Saddle Home.”

My friends, you cannot experience something like this without forever after wondering what was happening. I had a similar experience in church when I was a small child and maybe there is a hint of an answer in it.

For a child who hated church, it was most unusual for me to look forward  to hearing an evangelist but when Uncle Bud Robinson came to our church for a revival, I was always excited. Nobody had to tell me to listen. I was hypnotized from his first word until his last.

“Uncle Buddy” was tongue-tied. When he talked you felt he was letting you in on all of life’s most beautiful secrets. He talked about the Lord so sweetly that you knew He was Uncle Bud’s dearest and most intimate friend.

As he talked, people would laugh hard and then cry a little but all the crying was that delicious kind where your heart is overflowing through your eyes.

I think the same thing was happening with Hank and Uncle Bud. Roy Clark said, “It’s something going on deep within the talents of certain artists.” So let’s start with Emerson’s statement, “Your calling is in your talents,” and then realize fully that when the Holy Spirit expresses our callings and talents in a way that is deeply and completely us, it creates a powerful magnetic energy field in us and around us. People are hit with it and do not fully realize what is going on.

My sister writes spiritual poetry. One day I put on one of her CDs and listened to it all the way through. I laughed a lot. I cried a lot. She made me feel exactly like Hank and Uncle Bud made me feel.

When the Hoy Spirit speaks through your deepest and most real self, believe it or not, you create the same energy field as Hank and Uncle Bud. If that does not excite you, report to the nearest funeral home at once.
