GOD SURELY HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR
1-24-10

Just this morning at breakfast Redbird Clingan and I were fondly remembering my late playmate, Hoyle Picklesimer (yes, that was his real name). He faithfully came everywhere I played  music and we frequently went somewhere to eat or drink coffee after the gig.

I loved Hoyle’s company and he loved mine. He also loved the way I was always picking at him and joking with him. It was pointless like a dog chasing a car but I could not help ribbing Hoyle all the time. Even when he was dying and asked me to come and do a final concert for him, I had to pick on him a little. I played all his favorite songs and we reminisced about some of our funny times.

Like once when I asked him if I was getting old and ugly. He said, “Now why would you ask me a question like that?” I said, “Because when I used to walk onstage and hit a chord on my guitar, all the girls would look toward the stage and I could take my pick of them, but now, Hoyle, they don’t even look when I hit that first chord.”

He looked puzzled and asked, “Do you still hit the same chord?” A little irritated at such a silly question, I replied, “Well, yes. Why do you ask?” He answered, “Well, at least we know it ain’t the guitar.”

I once had a very silly dream and it made me think of this exchange with Hoyle...

Me: Hoyle, do you ever wonder why you are here?
He: No , I never have.
Me: I can’t believe you woke up on a strange planet and never wondered how you got there or what you were there to do.
He: No I never have thought of that.
Me: Well, you don’t have to ever wonder because God told me what your purpose is on Earth, Hoyle.”
HE: Really? What is it?
Me: God told me He put you here so I would have someone to play with.
He: Well, I’ll say one thing -- I have certainly fulfilled my purpose.

So what was the silly dream that reminded me of Hoyle?

I was working on a construction site (which is funny in itself) and took out my lunchbox to eat and God spoke to me out of the lunchbox.  Somehow I knew it was God but just to be positive I asked, “This is God, isn’t it.” The lunchbox voice said, “Certainly.” I said, “If I may ask, God, why are you speaking to me from within a lunchbox.” He said, “Always remember, my child, that even God needs someone to play with.”

Think of all the times in the Bible God spoke to different people in strange ways. He spoke to Moses in a bush. He spoke to Eljah in a still voice after he scared the pee out of him with an earthquake and a storm.

So is it so strange that God spoke to me from a lunchbox?

Now I fellowship consciously with God in my fun times. I realize He is there. He is omnipresent so he must be there because it is His very nature to be everywhere.

If you want to have more powerful good times, just pause and realize God is there with you. God loves to laugh, too. If he didn’t, He would not have made silly things like you and me and monkeys and baboons and roosters and possums.

And be sure to listen close every time you open your lunchbox.
