YOU ARE A SONG
4-27-08

You are a song.

Now I didn’t get this from some sky-walking bliss bunny. I learned it from the famous mathematician-physicist Dr. Donald Hatch Andrews.

He wrote, “Our very bodies are vibrant with the most complex music of all, a tapestry of sound with tones millions of times more varied than any symphony ever dreamed of.”

Now you probably won’t believe that. We believe the very worst things about ourselves without questioning them at all. If a theologian tells us we are born with “original sin,” we just swallow it like a baby robin gulps down a worm.

The term “original sin” is neither in our bible nor in any of the other bibles of the world religions. And even the inferential verses used to sell it are not very impressive.  David must have been thinking of the child  Bathsheba conceived from his adultery and murder when he cried out in shame, “In sin was I conceived.” One of the prophets was more on target in saying He knew us before the foundation of the world.

One of the most powerful books I have ever read was Matthew Fox’s Original Blessing. It is a big thick book and my copy is dog-eared. I have gone back to it many times. So it is not hard for me to accept Dr. Andrew’s scientific statement that you and I are songs.

Believing something can actuate it. If I tell you it is raining outside and you believe me, you will get your raincoat or umbrella before you go out. Believing led you to action.

You will not hear your own music until you believe you are a song. It is simply not believable for people afflicted with the idea of original sin. How can a weak worm of the dust believe such a sweet thing?

Back in 1980 when I first read what Dr. Andrews said and wrote about it in my first book, Things That Really Matter, I had never listened for my own music, nor had I heard the music of others.  Over these years I have gradually heard it more and more in smiles, tones of voice, kind touches, and all the ways we release the music from our souls.

A little girl said it well to her Sunday School class: “When you see the trees flowering, that’s how you can be, too. When God sings to you, then you sing, too.”

We usually remember Jesus saying, “”I am the light,” but we seldom remember He also said, “You are the Light.” Dr. Andrews commented on this, too: “At this moment you are filled with light, and not only are you filled with it, you are radiating it, and this can be proved in the laboratory.”

The great singer Roland Hayes, spent some years in Chattanooga. In one performance someone asked him why he did a slow bow and seemed to hold that position so long before beginning his concerts. He said, “I always say this prayer, ‘Lord, let me be a open channel so the people can hear us sing.’”

The song coursing through your body, mind and soul is actually the song imparted to you at the moment of your birth. John explained this when he said, “He is the Light that lights every man coming into the world.”

In an African village pregnant mothers compose a song and sing it while they carry the child. When the child is born they continue to sing it to him or her. Likewise, the energy given to us at our beginning is a song unique to us. It is our song.

I love all these references to our “Original Blessing.” Man is indeed a song. We can prove it to ourselves as we tune in with our awareness. Never let anyone take away your light. Never lose your awareness of the song you are. Listen with your heart.
