I was overwhelmed by the response of people on my list after I asked them to pray for my brother Blaine when he fell and had to have brain surgery. I was not surprised at openly religious people saying they would pray for him. But dozens of people who have never discussed spiritual matters with me wrote that they were praying for him. I appreciated the healing power of both groups. The experience helped me clarify my views about prayer. The surprise element for me came from those who are not viewed as “the praying kind.” Then I realized that some of the most intensely spiritual people I have ever known have been reluctant to discuss any religions topic and have just gone about their life u a seemingly mundane way. They don’t make noises about their spirituality because they see that as a shallow expression of spirituality. The deeper levels of spirituality to them are faithfulness, non-pretension, honesty and obedience to their internal values. They seldom pray out loud or testify. They just live among us, work among us and avoid big stirs of any kind. The religious would not classify them as spiritual because they don’t express their spirituality in religious ways. Often they unconsciously exude spirituality in the form of faithfulness and a quiet, centered stability. Let me put it to you this way: if you had a neighbor on one side who never talked about religion to you but kept his word, supported his family and was responsible and on the other side you had a neighbor who went to church and turned double back flips but was not honest and trustworthy, which one would you most like to pray for you? I think there are perfectly natural and explainable reasons why prayer is effective. Everything is energy and unselfish, caring prayer is one of the highest forms of energy. Prayer is the act of sending the energy we possess through God’s pipelines to someone who heeds it. That’s what makes it powerful. Knowing you are a spiritual being, ask yourself this question: would you prefer to walk in a roomful of people who are praying or a roomful of people who are fretting? You would instantly feel the energy of both rooms as soon as you walked in. In the roomful of praying people, you would feel the power of goodness, love and caring. This pure energy would put its arms around you as soon as you entered. In the other room you would be instantly dragged down. Negative energy is nasty -- so nasty it feels like something sticky on your skin. If this truth of energy transmission is true in a group situation, it is also true when we are one-on-one. We can and do sense each other’s energy and there is no higher spiritual energy than love, kindness, caring, honesty and just being real. That’s why Jesus said where two are gathered in his name (name in biblical languages means “nature”), there he was among them. The honesty of two souls who feel the Christ consciousness coming together with the intent of helping generates a powerful surge. That’s why people are often healed physically and emotionally. It is the power of a righteous man that availeth much. Not a noisy man but a righteous man. And a righteous man is made righteous by right thinking. As a man thinks, so is he. These principles of prayer work in an email setting as well as any other setting. Each note I got assuring me the person was praying for Blaine added to the healing energy that grew and grew with each new note. It started with the first note writer and me gathering via email in the nature of Jesus (love), then Jesus joined us and that really upped the spiritual amperage. Each new note added energy and power to the healing process. I am grateful to you and Blaine is better
