This
quote from Florida Scott Maxwell really got me: "You need to claim
the events of your life to make yourself yours. When you truly possess
all you have done, which may take some time, you are fierce with
reality." I
have no idea who Florida Scott Maxwell is but I love it when someone
knocks me down with a thought. When I read this a long time ago, I was
running from several events of my life. Oh, I acknowledged they happened
whenever it became absolutely necessary but I didn't allow myself to
truly possess all I had done. The
biggest understatement in her words is "which may take some
time." Can anyone embrace a hot coal? That's how some of our events
become in our minds. Hot coals we step around as soon as they come to
mind. It took me years to "possess" them. To
possess your life events doesn't just mean to own up to them. It means
to own them. To say, "Hey, this is a chapter in my life and my life
would be incomplete if it was deleted. It happened. I was there. And I
did the best I could as the person I was and with the consciousness I
possessed at that time." This
is the way to "make yourself yours." I love that phrase. You
cannot belong to yourself until you acknowledge and possess all you have
ever been and see it in the context of the person you was at that time. One
time after a divorce I actually married myself. I went thru the entire
ritual and laughed at first until I realized I knew all my faults! Who
would ever get married if they knew all the faults of their lovers?
Well, at some point you will have to marry yourself to "make
yourself yours." You will have to say "I do" to all the
events of your life and how they have been a part of making you who you
are. When
you possess all the events of your life and make yourself yours, Florida
Scott Maxwell says you "become fierce with reality." You
no longer run from it. You become honest and that takes away the fear of
reality. You have already faced the worst and overcome. You
no longer hide from man when you cease to hide from yourself. Websites
