THE UNTAKEN SHOTS

I heard about a man who bought an expensive guitar and started learning to play it, One day he put it in the case and slid it under the bed and it remained there until he died and had a thick coat of dust on it when the family survivors found it.

It reminded me of the old saying, “We miss 100 percent of the shots we don’t take.”

While I am not a big believer in making New Year’s resolutions, if one makes a single one the most important thing in the world for them to do is to immediately take a step to fulfill it.

If you vow to travel somewhere, the first step is not starting your car. You could sit there on and on and listen to the motor idle. The first step is getting the car in gear and moving toward your destination.

A friend wrote me a not this week listing a lot of things she wants to do. I know her and she will receive this mailing so I need to make it clear that what I say is not a reflection of a lack of confidence in her discernment and good judgment. But what I said was it is important to bring order to our ambitions. We can have too many goals to give any one the time and attention it will require to attain it.

Don’t leave your most beautiful song unsung. Don’t let your instrument collect dust under the bed. You were given a brain so stay sane.

Sanity says, “Go for it at once. Do something. Make that critical first step. Take your shot.”
