THE VERY SAME SAP

I have always been elevated by Jesus' saying, "I am the vine and you are the branches." As Andrew Murray says, "What can be closer or more intimate than the union between a vine and one of its branches? The very same sap that is in the vine is to be found also in the branch."

With that kind of intimate union with God, why do we have such dry times? Times when we feel abandoned by God like Job felt on his pile of cinders or like Jesus felt on the cross. Since God is omnipresent, it must be our own awareness that sometimes fails to work.

The vine-branch image is one to hang onto at such times. If God is omni-present, it is important for us to be omni-aware. We can only download as much of the sap as our awareness allows.

One concept that helps me is to know the sap is flowing between me and the Vine whether or not I am aware. It's the sap that keeps me breathing and conscious. It's the sap that makes me stand and look with wonder upon the flowers, birds, skies and rainbows. It's the sap that overflows my heart with love. It's the sap that keeps me alive.

A hummingbird is eyeball to eyeball with me as I write this. She sticks her long beak into the sugar water (sap) I prepared. When she drinks that supply, I have a big jug in the fridge to bring to her. Supply is not the limiting factor. It's the size of her beak and her body.

To scale the heights of human possibilities, it is important to reach for the larger concept. Therefore, I keep myself aware that God has as much sap as I need and want at all times. I am certain we can tap it with our awareness at any moment of our lives. It is not necessary for us to ever hunger and thirst. Hunger and thirst are self-imposed limitations.

Spiritual power, beauty and glory are always flowing.
