WHERE’S THE SUN?

I am sitting here this morning recovering from this year’s version of the flu. It’s the worst version to ever hit me. It has knocked so much wind out of me that I have had to “dig a little deeper,” in the words of an old spiritual I used to sing.

Illness can make me feel separated from my spiritual roots better than anything. If a woman disappoints me, I can understand it may be her own personal problems rather than something I have done. Same with a friend. But when we get sick, we quit thinking about all the possible causes and blame it on God. We take it real personal.

I am working on breaking that pattern. Illness can come from specific germs attacking a specific part of our body. It can come from a weakened immune system. Like accidents, it can just happen when we are unable to trace it back to any specific cause. I don’t want to keep reacting as if God is “striking me down.”

I do know I have never been patient enough to be a good patient. If I can improve my patience one centimeter, that is spiritual progress for me. Everything that comes our way in this life is a chance for spiritual practice.

This morning I got up before daylight. It was cold and foggy. When the sun came up, I couldn’t see it. But it was there. It is always there. At first, the only way I knew was an increased amount of lightness outside. I couldn’t even tell where it was located. But as it dissolved some of the fog and mists, I could see the general location.

I looked out in a little while and it was clearly shining through a specific area of fogginess. It made the fog look like shimmering stars were playing in it. Then it appeared around the edges of a patch of fog, producing a halo effect.

The most beautiful manifestations of sunlight are when it shines through barriers of any kind. Like clouds. Or fog. Think of all the gorgeous ways the sun has shined for you. Such breath-taking beauty!

The way we get rainbows is the sun shining through something that separates us from it. It helps me to realize these barriers are only temporary obstructions to our vision. And to know the sun never goes away. It is always there.

Maybe I will get to see a rainbow soon!
